Amidst increasing concerns about ethical practices and sustainability, brands are being called out for exploiting vulnerable workers, contributing to environmental degradation, and failing to ensure transparency in their operations. Consumers are demanding more accountability, and regulatory bodies are pushing for stricter compliance. In this context, understanding and managing an end-to-end supply chain is key not only to ensuring ethical and sustainable business practices but also to maintaining brand integrity and trust.
LLUK has recognised the importance of this approach and is committed to understanding every stage of the supply chain, from raw material production to the final product. Earlier this year, a select team from LLUK visited Tellenby Merino Stud, a commercial stud producing high-quality Superfine Merino wool, situated on Westcott Farm in Devon. The aim of the visit was to gain an immersive, hands-on understanding of wool growing and production processes, reaffirming LLUK’s dedication to ethical sourcing, transparency, and educating its team about every step in the production processes.
Exploring Tellenby Merino Stud: LLUK’s Commitment to Ethical Sourcing and Sustainability
Owned by Lesley Prior, Tellenby Merino has been a pioneer in breeding Superfine Merino sheep by importing the finest genetics from Australia for over 15 years, in the efforts of bringing Merino back home. LLUK’s visit, timed with the shearing season, provided a unique opportunity for the team to get involved in hands-on processes, including shearing and wool grading, under the expert guidance of Lesley and her team. The goal was to deeply understand the steps involved in producing the wool, furthering the brand's knowledge of products with a clear and ethical origin.
Led by Rachel Walker (Founder & CEO), along with Lucy Minty (Bespoke Projects), Andrea Burka (Production Manager), Alexandra Kiss (Industrial Sewing Machinist), and Laura Kadhani (Marketing Manager), the team had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the supply chain we are part of and the significance of wool quality, sustainability practices, and the dedication involved in ethical farming.
Why Understanding the End-to-End Supply Chain is Vital for Fashion Brands
For LLUK, understanding the entire supply chain from wool production to the finished product is more than just a business strategy - it’s a core value. In an era where consumers are more eco-conscious and demand transparency, having control over each step of the process allows LLUK to make informed decisions about partnerships, material sourcing, and production methods. It also ensures that their practices align with sustainability goals, including reducing waste, promoting circularity, and upholding high ethical standards.
We recognise the importance of practical skills and technical expertise, which are central to LLUK’s services and the success of our people. This commitment to education and practical skill-building strengthens not only LLUK’s internal capabilities but also contributes to the growth and sustainability of the wider industry.
LLUK’s Vision for the Future
The experience at Tellenby Merino Stud raises the question: “Why is it important to understand the end-to-end supply chain?” As LLUK looks to the future, the answer is clear: by educating the team about the processes within their industry, it allow us as a business to make ethical, informed decisions regarding how we work, whom we work with, and who accredits us. By investing in partnerships and skill development, we will strive to not only strengthening our own capabilities but also contributing to the growth and circularity of the wider industry.
